Welcome to the Irish Society of Community and Public Health Medicine

Irish members were first admitted to the Association of Metropolitan Medical Officers of Health (est. London 1856)  in 1859.

In 1919, this Society approved a new constitution to reflect it’s role as the representative body of the Public Health Service and membership was extended to any medical officer engaged in public health work.

A lot has changed in public and community health since 1859. Community doctors with special skills in child health screening, surveillance, immunisation and public health doctors skilled in infectious disease follow up and tracing remain of vital importance.   The ISCPHM maintains a strong role in our education and networking. There are five branches of the Society nationwide.

The objectives of this Society are:

  1. To promote, advance and encourage the practice of Community and Public Health Medicine.
  2. To Promote and encourage exchange of ideas and recent advances in Community and Public Health Medicine at group meetings and at central level.
  3. To assist in obtaining better working conditions and facilities for its members.

We hold our annual scientific meeting in Dublin in the Autumn.
