A society dedicated to improving community and public health by supporting our members to do their jobs well, through education, collaboration, dialogue, advocacy, service development and quality improvement.
We are society of doctors, dedicated to improving community and public health by supporting our members to do their jobs well, through education, collaboration, dialogue, advocacy, service development, and quality improvement.
The society is made up of a voluntary Council, elected annually at the Annual General Meeting (held during the Annual Scientific Meeting, ASM), and its members – doctors who work in the areas of community and public health, predominantly in public sector posts.
The Council comprises the president, out-going president, secretary, treasurer, assistant treasurer and 10-12 ordinary Council members.
There are five branches: North Eastern; South Leinster; Western; Munster; Metropolitan. Of these, only the Munster and South Leinster branches are currently active. The Western branch is in the process of being reactivated. The other branches are inactive, but we would encourage doctors in those areas to consider also reviving their local branch.
The objectives of this Society
Practice
To promote, advance and encourage the practice of Community and Public Health Medicine.
Collaboration
To Promote and encourage exchange of ideas and recent advances in Community and Public Health Medicine at group meetings and at central level.
Advocacy
To assist in obtaining better working conditions and facilities for its members.
The Society delivers RCPI-accredited educational activities throughout the year, including an annual Scientific Meeting, regional branch meetings, and themed educational events.
Our programmes address a wide range of topics relevant to practice, including immunisation, child development, the health and wellbeing of doctors, and the role of technology in healthcare. These events also provide important opportunities for members to connect, share knowledge, and support one another professionally.
The Society’s Annual General Meeting is held in conjunction with the Scientific Meeting, where motions are considered, annual accounts are presented, and reports from regional branches are received.
In addition to organising the annual scientific meeting, the Council is involved in several other pieces of work, usually through subcommittees or working groups. Currently these include the Finances Subcommittee, the National Clinical Audit Working Group, the Abstract Review Committee, the Website Subcommittee, the Faculty Development Working Group, and the CMD Training Needs Survey Subcommittee. The subcommittees and working groups support the Council to fulfill the Society’s objectives.
